MCAA Delivers Keynote Address at NMIA Annual Conference
The Mason Contractors Association of America's Director of Engineering, Rashod R. Johnson, P.E., delivered the keynote address at the 2006 Annual Awards Banquet for the National Masonry Instructors Association's (NMIA) Annual Conference in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Johnson spoke to a group of almost 50 masonry instructors from various parts of the country about the industry's support of instructors, training the future workforce, and improving masonry workmanship.
NMIA Vice President, David Quaker, acted as Master of Ceremonies introducing the NMIA Officers: President Eugene Johnson, Secretary/Treasurer Robert Campbell and Chaplain Morris Wilson.
The Awards Ceremony honored the 2006 NMIA Hall of Fame inductees: James Alston and Bernard Hubbard. Both of these men were honored for their tireless efforts within the NMIA and their outstanding efforts as masonry instructors.

ICPI Foundation's International Conference on Concrete Block Paving
The Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute Foundation, sister to the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute and the Small Element Paving Technologists, are holding the eighth International Conference on Concrete Block Paving at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, Nov. 6-8. The conference theme, "Sustainable Paving for the Future," speaks to the ability of segmental concrete pavements to address total environment design ecological, energy, safety and visual design needs for the 21st century. The conference will emphasize storm water management with permeable interlocking pavements, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), and design for the disabled.

MCAA Hosts Fundraiser for McSweeney

On July 11, the Mason Contractors Association of America (MCAA) hosted a fundraiser at our headquarters in Schaumburg, III., for Illinois 8th Congressional District candidate David McSweeney. The fundraiser, which was co-hosted by the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), and the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), was a great success.
McSweeney is opposing incumbent Congresswoman Melissa Bean, who is facing criticism from both Republicans and Democrats for her voting record in Congress. With the mid-term elections quickly approaching, the National Republican Party has targeted the McSweeney/Bean race as one of the hottest races in the country. With the prospect of losing the majority in the House of Representatives, Republicans are putting a great deal of energy and resources into this campaign. Democrats only need to win 15 seats in mid-term elections to take back a majority in the House.
The GOP has held fundraisers in the past couple of months with headliners including Vice President Dick Cheney, House Speaker Dennis Hastert and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. In addition, just three days after the fundraiser hosted by MCAA, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) attended a fundraiser in honor of McSweeney.
