This article describes the findings of hundreds of inspections of existing masonry chimneys throughout the Chicago area. It also explains how the service conditions that most of the older masonry chimneys were designed to withstand have changed over the years, and offers a brief engineering discussion regarding design, general maintenance and restoration suggestions.
