NSC Releases Water Management Document
The Natural Stone Council (NSC) has released its inaugural best practices document, focusing on water management, a collaborative effort of the natural stone industry. The best practices outlined in this initial document offer effective strategies in which a quarry or stone processing facility can minimize its overall daily water demand.
Due to the significance of water in the quarrying and manufacturing process, the NSC selected it as the topic of the inaugural best practices document following their sustainability research. Because of global water shortages and fluctuating policies around water usage, responsible water management is key to achieving sustainable practices in any industry.
The NSC believes it is important to establish best practice guidelines in order to reduce the life cycle impact of stone products. In partnership with The University of Tennessee Center for Clean Products, the NSC will produce a series of best practice documents, case studies, materials fact sheets and a life cycle assessment.

JLG Rebrands Gradall, Expands JLG Telehandler Line
JLG Industries Inc. announced that, by the end of 2008, Gradall-branded telehandlers will become part of an expanded JLG-branded telehandler family. JLG will continue to provide Ground Support, JLG's industry leading aftermarket service, parts, training and technical support services, for existing Gradall-branded telehandlers.
Aftermarket support for Gradall-branded telehandlers, as well as new, JLG-branded, rear-pivot steer machines, will continue with the same service network as before. This rebranding initiative marks the completion of a plan that began in 2006, when JLG sold the Gradall excavator line.

Dry Stone Walling Competition Winner
The Dry Stone Conservancy in Lexington, Ky., held its fifth-annual National Walling Competition in October in Pleasant Hill, Ky., which featured 38 masons from around the nation and one builder from Scotland. In total, 21 awards were handed out to winners in three levels of expertise: professional, amateur and novice. However, the locals proved to be the best around.
James Miles of Paris, Ky., captured the title in the professional division. The 2008 amateur champion is Seth Thomas of Nicholasville, Ky., and Tim York of Winchester, Ky, took the novice division title.
The competition was held at Shaker Village in Pleasant Hill, home to the nation's largest collection of rock fence. Competitors were given eight hours to take down and rebuild a dry stone wall that is judged on the efficiency with which the stone at hand is used and accuracy in matching the historic pattern of stonework.
The Dry Stone Conservancy's Walling Competition is the only competition of its kind in North America. For more information on the program, visit www.drystone.org. IMAS
