Robinson Wins SPEC MIX
BRICKLAYER 500

The 2011 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 National bricklaying champion is Ray Robinson, a mason with J.A.M Construction Inc. in Gainesville, Fla., who laid 697 bricks. This timed, 60-minute competition was held in January at the Masonry Construction's Challenge Arena during 2011 World of Concrete/World of Masonry in Las Vegas.

Robinson won the grand prize of a new 2011 Ford F-250, 4 X 4 XLT, V8 Super Duty, CrewCab truck that he drove home with his wife and father in-law. He also won $5,000, a STIHL TS 420 A-EWC Cutquik cut-off machine, and thousands of dollars in additional sponsor prizes. His mason tender was Lynette Darby, also with J.A.M. Construction Inc. She is the first female ever to compete in the SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 National.

The SPEC MIX Bricklayer 500 TOP CRAFTSMAN award was earned by mason Dave Moyle of Moyle Masonry in Wadena, Iowa. His tender was Pat Pope of Volga, Iowa. Moyle won $5,000 in cash, an EZ Grout MH-12 "Little Piggy" mixer, a STIHL TS 420 A-EWC Cutquik cut-off machine and thousands of dollars in sponsor prizes.

The second place overall winner was mason Jeff Burton with Miter Masonry Construction in Cincinnati, who won $4,000 and sponsor prizes. His tender was his son, Raymond Burton.

The third place overall winner was mason Dave Moyle, who won $3,000 and sponsor prizes.

The SPEC MIX TOUGHEST TENDER winner was Raymond Burton. He won $2,500 and sponsor prizes. The SPEC MIX TOUGHEST TENDER is a preliminary event held just before SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 National. In this event, the tenders race the clock to set up a predefined work area for the mason. Burton's winning time was 20:20:56 minutes.

BrickStainable Winners Announced

Potomac Valley Brick awarded two grand prize winners and five honorable mentions in its second sustainable design competition, BrickStainable. PVB will award a $10,000 grand prize in the Integrated Building Design Category to Jamillah Muhammad and her team at Perkowitz & Ruth in Virginia. An award of $7,500 in the Technical Design category will go to Kelly Winn and his team at the Center for Architecture Science and Ecology (CASE) in New York.

The teams will be honored at the BrickStainable Awards Ceremony in Washington, D.C., on March 31. Muhammad's winning team includes Ronald Moore, Dindo Mabana, Tou Boran Pek, Kathleen Stover and Boryana Fileva. Winn worked with Associate Professor Jason Vollen and other members at CASE.

Three honorable mentions were awarded in the Integrated Building Design category, with each winner to receive $2,000:
* Heather Midori Santos and Jillian Christina Schroettinger, students at Cal Poly Pomona in California for MassEnergy Science Center
* Shane Valentine, a student at University of Texas San Antonio in Texas for Cultivating Energy
* Robert Kane, a student in San Casciano in Italy for BRICK BRICK BRICK BRICK.

Two honorable mentions were awarded in the Technical Design category, with each winner to receive $2,000:
* Kelly Winn, Jason Vollen and Ted Ngai of CASE New York for Climate Camouflage
* Rizal Muslimin, a student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Massachusetts for BrickBead.

Updates Look
