MASONRY STRONG Podcast, Episode 35 Recap: David Pitre, Chair of the Board at CMHA

Words: Justin Stengel

On this episode of the MASONRY STRONG Podcast, David Pitre sits down with Justin to talk about CMHA, the moves the association is making for the future of the industry, and the journey he took to get to being the Chair of the Board.

From Engineering School to Construction Sales
David's journey into construction began with civil engineering studies, but his initial vision was purely design-focused. As he gained field experience, witnessed his designs come to life, and ventured into sales, his career vision broadened significantly. David found greater fulfillment working directly with clients and developers, where he could have a wider scope of influence. Transitioning into construction materials allowed him to effectively blend his technical engineering skills with communication and business insight.

The Foundation of Engineering
A solid technical foundation is crucial in the construction industry. However, building strong client relationships is just as essential. Understanding how to engage clients and add value to their projects can significantly alter a career path. Sales and marketing in this field go beyond promotion; they involve solving real-world problems and addressing developer needs.

Why Masonry? The Lasting Appeal
Masonry has been a mainstay in U.S. construction for over a century, attracting professionals like David due to its innovation, aesthetics, and performance. Its versatility appeals to architects for its visual charm while offering solutions for broader project needs, such as durability and fire resistance. The collaboration of groups like CMHA, ICPI, and NCMA enhances product offerings, aligning well with David's background.

Active Engagement with CMHA and Industry Leadership
David's involvement with the Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association (CMHA) began in 2006. Encouraged by mentors, he became active in the association, realizing how advocacy and peer interactions could drive industry-wide improvements. CMHA provides a strong contractor base, which fuels program development and government affairs activities. As an engineer, David values influencing codes, developing technical notes, and enhancing producer marketability.

Evolution of Leadership
David's involvement deepened over time, leading from committee roles to leadership positions as Vice Chair and Chair-Elect. Nearly 20 years of regular participation enriched his professional network and knowledge, making him an effective leader within his company and the industry.

Networking, Meetings, and Professional Growth
Industry meetings have been pivotal for David, fostering strong friendships and career growth. Meeting peers regularly creates camaraderie among engineers, masons, architects, and suppliers. This networking broadens his understanding of best practices, new technologies, and evolving regulations, all while cultivating leadership skills.

Technical and Regional Aspects of Masonry
The engineering side of masonry is fascinating. David highlights its incredible resilience in storm-prone areas, emphasizing its advantages in high-wind events, as well as its inherent termite and fire resistance. Building codes vary significantly by state, presenting challenges and opportunities for advocacy. CMHA actively monitors regulatory agencies and works to influence codes and standards.

Looking Ahead: Automation, AI, and Innovation
Innovation remains a key theme, with automation at the forefront. Increased production throughput, manufacturing automation, and AI are shaping the next decade. David envisions a future where design is increasingly technology-assisted. Industry associations must remain proactive to adapt to these advancements.

Recruiting the Next Generation
Workforce development is a frequent topic at industry meetings. David believes in reaching out to "influencers" like teachers and professors. Clearly communicating masonry's benefits is key to driving market interest. Recruiting today's youth also requires targeting the digital and social media platforms they use for information.

Life Beyond Masonry
Outside of work, David values family time with his three children. He is actively involved in coaching baseball, attending sports events, and enjoying outdoor activities like hunting, fishing, and golfing. He has found a successful balance between his demanding career and family life.

Engineering for the Next Generation
David's passion for the field may be passing to his son, who is exploring a career in civil engineering. This interest has been fueled by an internship with the Alabama DOT and hands-on science projects.

Industry Collaboration, Advocacy, and Government Affairs
Masonry involves collaboration with a wide range of professionals. While designer-builder relationships can be complex, industry associations help address these concerns. The tools and best practices gained from association work often save billable hours and help increase masonry's market share.

Safety
Safety in manufacturing and construction has evolved significantly. A strong safety culture, starting from the top, fosters best practices for personal protective equipment and values worker health.

Creativity and R&D in Masonry Design
One of the most exciting aspects of masonry is witnessing its creative applications, from new finishes to innovative shapes. Companies monitor design trends and use focus groups to develop new products. A successful launch involves marketing, demos, and education to showcase new possibilities.

Structural Performance and Site Solutions
David’s engineering background gives him a strong understanding of masonry's role in solving unique site problems. Masonry's contributions are significant in critical structures, especially in K-12 education, where fire retardance and safety are vital in places like elevator shafts and school walls.
