Brick Remains Top Choice Among Architects & Homeowners, Glen-Gery Survey Reveals

In advance of National Architecture Day on November 1, 2024, Glen-Gery, a premier brick manufacturer that is part of Brickworks North America, released “Trends in Design and Renovation: A Comparative Study Among Homeowners and Architects,” a national survey revealing design and renovation preferences and trends.

Conducted by Talker Research (formerly OnePoll US) on behalf of Glen-Gery, the survey of 2,000 Americans—1,500 homeowners and 500 architects—also unveiled the most popular design trends of the last year. Leading the list were earth tones, “warm” minimalism, quiet luxury, traditional design with a contemporary twist and the use of textures and shapes. Both homeowners and architects emphasized these trends, along with a continued emphasis on sustainable designs.

“This survey reflects our ongoing commitment to understanding the pulse of the design community, understanding that the future of design hinges on collaboration and feedback,” said Tim Leese, marketing director for Glen-Gery. “By engaging with architects and homeowners, we want to uncover insights that will help us remain at the forefront of innovation, delivering products that not only meet current trends but also anticipate future needs. This will ensure we’re best able to reflect the aspirations, needs and preferences of an ever-changing market.”

Architects and Homeowners Unite in Preference for Brick as Key Exterior Material
Approximately four in 10 architects and homeowners both consider brick to be timeless and traditional, with architects also valuing its sustainable qualities and homeowners emphasizing its low-maintenance benefits. Brick remains a popular choice for exterior design with 67% of architects and 49% of homeowners responding that it is important for a home’s exterior to be brick. Of those 49% of homeowners, younger generations are placing increased importance on a home’s exterior being brick (64% Millennials and 68% Gen Z).

Intent to Buy or Build a Home is Strong for the Future
With real estate demand fluctuating across the country due to inventory shortages and record-breaking home prices, 47% of respondents indicated they plan to build or buy a home (or additional home) in the future, with 25% planning to do so in the next 12 months. Of those respondents, 86% of architects compared to 34% of homeowners noted they are planning to build or buy a home (or additional home) in the future.

Sustainable Design Trends Gain Momentum Among Architects and Younger Generations of Homeowners
Sustainability remained a prominent focus with 78% of architects expressing concern about sustainability in new project design or renovations, while 58% of homeowners shared similar concerns regarding home decor and renovations. Generationally, younger generations—32% of Gen Z and 26% of Millennials compared to 16% of Gen X and 15% of Baby Boomers—were more interested in seeing sustainable design trends in 2024 than their older counterparts. Additionally, sustainability strongly impacted brand and product selection for architects securing 60% of responses.

Cost Tops List of Influencing Factors on Material Selection for Home and Building Projects
When choosing materials for home or building design, cost was the main factor influencing brand and product for both architects and homeowners. For architects, sustainability also played a significant role in decision-making, followed by product availability. Meanwhile, homeowners also prioritized how the materials will complement the other brands or products they’ve selected, along with the convenience and ease of purchase.
