From humble beginnings to becoming a vital member of the masonry community, Zach's story is both inspiring and educational. 

Zach Everett: From High School to a Career in Safety 

Zach Everett's voyage into the industry began over 30 years ago, right after high school. It wasn't a planned career move; instead, it started as a job at the Chevron refinery's fire and safety department, where he did foundational tasks like cleaning fire trucks and servicing extinguishers. This exposure opened his eyes to what a career in safety might entail. 

Fast forward 33 years, and Zach has cemented his role in safety. But it wasn't just any company that claimed his professional passion. It was Brazos Masonry, a place he joined 22 years ago after moving to Waco, Texas. His journey with Brazos Masonry also connected him with the Mason Contractors Association of America (MCAA), spurred on by the company's involvement and encouragement from its owner, Mackie Bounds. 

Finding Passion in Safety and the Importance of Silica Awareness 

Zach's love for safety didn't ignite instantly; it was a gradual build-up. Even though he considered leaving the field a couple of times, opportunities always pulled him back in. A significant cause was his mission work with a church, reinforcing his commitment to community safety through skills such as CPR and first aid training. 

Zach elaborates on his role as the co-chair of the MCAA's safety committee, emphasizing the evolving safety challenges over the years. From wall bracing to silica regulations, Zach's insights have been instrumental in educating the industry. Silica, in particular, is a subject he is passionate about due to its serious health implications. Prolonged exposure can lead to silicosis, a preventable yet incurable disease that he feels deeply compelled to combat through education and safety measures. 

"Silicosis is incurable, and we, at MCAA, are dedicated to ensuring our folks don’t have to suffer from it. Our community genuinely cares." 

Training the Next Generation: Overcoming Cultural and Generational Shifts 

Zach observed generational differences in attitudes towards safety in masonry. While older generations might view safety protocols as a cultural shift, younger workers are generally more receptive. They've grown up knowing the significance of safety not just as a regulatory requirement but as a moral obligation to protect themselves and others.

In his efforts to spread safety awareness about silica, Zach conducts classes and webinars, sometimes lasting four hours. He acknowledges the challenge of maintaining attention but leverages humor and storytelling to keep sessions engaging. 

Networking and Learning at MCAA Conferences 

MCAA conventions and mid-year meetings offer Zach the chance to forge lifelong friendships and share knowledge with peers from all over. With about ten to twelve conferences under his belt, he values the camaraderie and wealth of shared experience these events bring. 

For Zach, the biggest perk of MCAA membership is the ready access to collective wisdom. Young mason contractors can gain insights from seasoned professionals, a resource that Zach considers invaluable for anyone in the industry. 

"Being able to network and ask, 'What do y’all do in this situation?' is an invaluable tool. The MCAA offers real-life practice and not just theory." 

Construction Technology: Streamlining Safety Processes 

The embrace of technology in construction has significantly eased Zach’s role over the years. Innovations in silica safety, like robotics and new construction tech, have streamlined operations, allowing for quicker and more efficient safety practices. What once took 30 minutes to document can now be finished in five. 

However, Zach notes that while technology is a tool that simplifies paperwork, it's the tangible reduction in workplace injuries that truly marks progress. From 54 injuries a year down to three to five, Zach takes pride in the visible improvements made over the years. 

Family and the Future: A Personal Touch 

Outside the safety realm, Zach has a knack for building—literally. From custom homes to renovations, working with his hands brings him joy. It's not uncommon for him to juggle a career in safety while indulging this hobby. 

His son, Justice, unexpectedly joined him at Brazos Masonry as a part-time help. From paperwork assistant to safety manager, Justice's journey highlights the supportive culture within the company. Zach feels fulfilled watching Justice grow, even if it was an unplanned venture for his son.

For Zach, "Masonry Strong" is more than just an industry term; it's a testament to the secure future he's built for his family and community. He is driven by a passion for reducing workplace injuries and falls, ensuring that every worker can go home safe, day after day.
