Those summers fueled Jim's affection for the industry and its people, sparking a lifelong journey.

The Path through College and Football

While masonry was a clear path, it wasn't Jim's only passion. Encouraged by his father and his love for football, Jim pursued college. During his five years in college—a year longer than usual due to the allure of football—Jim juggled academics and sports, which he admits kept him motivated toward securing a degree.

Jim's brief stint with football taught valuable life lessons, redirecting him back to masonry with renewed ambition.

Transition to the Mason Contractors Association

Later, Jim veered into the travel industry, a pivotal turn that kept him connected with many of the very mason contractors he would later work for. His role was serendipitous; after an unexpected vacancy in the Mason Contractors Association of Chicago, Jim was well-recommended and assumed the position. That was over three decades ago.

The Role of the MCA: A Vital Resource

The Mason Contractors Association (MCA) holds importance not just for established contractors but also for those starting out. It's a place where contractors, regardless of their geographical competition, can exchange ideas and resources freely.

Organizations like the MCA provide invaluable resources like safety techniques, technology updates, standards, and codes—essentials for contractors to thrive.

Recognizing Excellence: Entering the Hall of Fame

Jim's contributions and influence within the industry did not go unnoticed. His induction into the prestigious Masonry Hall of Fame was a testament to his impact. Yet, in his humility, Jim feels that the recognition was overwhelming, sharing an emotional moment with his mother upon hearing the news.

Traits of Successful Masons

Through decades of observation, Jim has distilled key traits every mason should possess:

  1. Hard Work: Masons are known for their exemplary work ethic.
  2. Loyalty: Building a core team that stands the test of time is crucial. This fosters a sense of belonging and loyalty.
  3. Resourcefulness: Managing finances wisely in a business filled with unexpected expenses is a hallmark of successful contractors.
Leisure and Life Beyond Masonry

Jim finds joy outside the gritty work environment of masonry too. A keen golfer, Jim enjoys the greens with fellow contractors. His past as a Golden Glove boxer inspires his workouts to this day.

While reflecting on his boxing days, Jim notes a parallel between boxing and masonry's demands. Both require quick thinking, agility, and the ability to stay on one's feet under pressure.

The Bricklayer 500: Witnessing Competitions Evolve

Having been involved with Spec Mix Bricklayer 500 since its inception, Jim has seen the event transform dramatically.

Today, the event attracts thousands, boasts large jumbotrons, and offers substantial prize money, dramatically growing from $200 to a brand-new Silverado pickup truck. Competitors train rigorously, pushing themselves to exceed previous records.

A Testament to Growth: The MCAA's Journey

Jim speaks highly of the MCAA's role in providing resources and leadership, particularly in areas like wall bracing—a service they offer nationwide.

Embracing the Future with Technology

As the masonry world embraces AI and new technologies, Jim expresses excitement about what future advancements will bring to the industry.

The focus is on reliable information, ensuring that masons are equipped to navigate industry challenges efficiently while maintaining safety and quality.
