tract Bonds
(Continued from page 14)

The sum due under the contract, including the retained percentage. But I want to emphasize that the assignment becomes effective only in the event of actual default. The surety does not interfere with the operation of the contractor unless and until there is a breach and it is required to do so. This is, of course, the practice of a bonding company to pursue all of its legal rights in its efforts to hold down and recover its loss. I make this clear because a Contract Bond is not an insurance policy to protect the contractor, but is a surety bond to protect the owner. So, if a contractor gets into a jam through an error in estimating or by getting a job that turns out to be a bad one, it is the contractor's responsibility to find a way to work out of the problem.

nounce Appointments
Change of company name and the appointment of three new executives has been announced by Millard O. Harrell, General Manager of the United Brick Division, American-Marietta Co. Formerly known as the United Brick & Tile Co., the firm, with general offices in Kansas City, Mo., has plants in eight locations in Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma.

Named division operations manager for United Brick is Robert J. Kiefer, formerly district works manager for LaClede Christy Co. He will direct all production and construction activities for the division.

Newly appointed division marketing manager for United Brick is Arthur Stone. Widely known in the clay products industry, he was formerly associated with both Streator Brick Co, and Malvern Brick & Tile Co. as sales manager. Mr. Stone previously served as executive director of the Chicago region of the Structural Clay Products Institute.

All credit and accounting operations of United Brick are now being directed by William A. Rush as division finance manager. A certified public accountant, Mr. Rush has engaged in industrial and public accounting for 16 years.

APPOINT NEW MANAGERS
The appointments of Donald Walker as market research manager and Don Berlinguette as advertising manager at OMARK Industries, Inc., have been announced by Edward P. Skralskis, executive vice president of the Portland, Oregon firm.

1 of Every 5 Dwellings
Last Year Was Apartment
One of every five dwellings built last year was an apartment, according to year-end construction summaries. This proportion is expected to rise even higher during 1961.

Primary reasons for this rise in rental units include: (1) Increase in number of young adults and older people in the market for smaller, less expensive units; (2) failure of the industry to provide sufficient low-cost housing within budgets of various family groups; (3) increase of costlier "luxury" type homes and location away from metropolitan areas. Many of new apartment units have gone up within hailing distance of "downtown" areas.

NADD Adds 4 Chapters
WASHINGTON, D. C.-Charters in the National Association of Distributors & Dealers of Structural Clay Products were granted to four NADD chapters recently. Receiving charters were: John L. Swope, Jr., for the Free State Chapter (Maryland); Barney Haines, for the Pittsburgh Chapter; Winfield 8. Holland for the New England Chapter; and Arthur A. Squier for the Philadelphia-Delaware Valley Chapter.

The trouble with trouble is that much of it started out to be fun.
