HOUSTON, TEX. More than 150 architects, engineers, school and government officials, and contractors attended a seminar for architects last month at the Shamrock-Hilton Hotel.
As sponsored by the Associated Masonry Contractors of Houston, the seminar was designed to acquaint those in the industry with various types of masonry units, wall types and to review the capabilities of masonry.
Featured were some 20 different types of masonry walls constructed of brick, concrete block, solar screen, glazed tile, stone, and exposed aggregate precast concrete Mo-sai panels.
Architects and engineers viewed the displays and discussed various features of the wall samples and where each would be best suited and advantages in certain applications over other wall types.
Key speaker was Casper Neer, dean of the School of Architecture, Catholic University, Washington, D. C., who discussed the many and varied uses of masonry construction, its versatility and permanence, He referred to several structures built thousands of years ago as demonstrating the durability of masonry.
Architects in attendance expressed deep interest in the sessions and urged that the Seminar become an annual project of the AMC, according to Herman L. May, chapter president, who coordinated the event.
The seminar ended with a discussion period after which a buffet was served.
