LEAD
MAN...
PORTRAIT OF AN EXECUTIVE
Paul B. Belden. Sr., Chairman of the Board of The Belden Brick Company, Canton, Ohio, has devoted much of his lifetime to developing manpower for the brick masonry industry.
The son of the founder of The Belden Brick Company, the 79-year-old Belden first became acquainted with the clay products industry at age 11, when he worked in his father's brick yard during summer vacations from school.
In 1904, when the company had one plant with a capacity production of six million brick, he took over management of the organization. Today the company has expanded into eight plants with a 185 million brick capacity annually.
In the 1930's, while serving as president of the American Face Brick Association, he played a leading role in joining his association with three others to form the Structural Clay Products Institute, a national association of brick, structural tile and architectural terra cotta makers, and since has served both on SCPI's board of Directors and Executive Committee.
A staunch advocate of manpower development in the masonry construction industry, he took the helm of the SCPI Mason Promotion Committee and directed a program to improve the standards of training brick layer apprentices, and to promote business for mason contractors and job opportunities for bricklayers.
In 1950, Belden was presented with the SCPI Award, a special honor reserved for outstanding brick industry leaders, which commended him for his "Progressive Leadership in Mason Training."
The highly prized Belden Trophy, symbol of the national bricklayer champion and appropriately named in honor of Belden, Sr., is presented annually by SCPI at a national competition of apprentice winners, representing state contests.
At the 1960 SCPI Convention, a replica of the Belden Trophy was presented to Belden in recognition of his tireless work in promoting apprentice training, and was accepted in his behalf by his son, Paul B. Belden, president of SCPI and the Belden Brick Company.
In addition to his position as Chairman of the Board, he also serves as management consultant for banking and ferro-alloy industries.
His civic activities has included serving as president of Canton Welfare Federation: Chairman of the Community Fund: Chairman of the Citizens Committee for Better Government: member of Chamber of Commerce: President of Stark County Historical Society and President of Ohio Historical Society.
Among his leisure activities, golf and bridge interest him most.
He has been married to Mary Hinchliffe Belden for 52 years, and has four sons, three of whom are active in the business, 23 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Their home is in Canton, Ohio.
