People & Events

Oscar Person, MCA member, Burlingame, Calif., was featured as guest speaker before a recent meeting of the Arizona Masonry Guild in Phoenix. He discussed the newly-developed technique of using brick panels for reinforced brick masonry.

Carroll Strohm, Jr., president of Nashville Breeko Block Co., is the president of the new Tennessee Concrete Masonry Association. This association was organized last month. Strohm is a former president of National Concrete Masonry Association.

The Cincinnati office of the U. S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training, has moved office to the 5th floor, Coney Island Building, 205 East 6th St., Cincinnati, Ohio. Phone Dunbar 1-2200, Ext. 317.

Edward J. Flickinger has been named vice president and member of the board of Indiana Cap & Set Co. (Emco), Franklin Park, manufacturer of fasteners and related products.

Charles C. Danna, Sr., and Turner Smith, both of the Houston MCA, are official assistant professors at the University of Houston. The two announced a request to the association to use university for assistance in the school's bricklaying course and have devoted several hours to date instructing students in the art of bricklaying.

The Houston chapter is placing the burden of membership where it counts - on the members, themselves and is confident the system will work. Cards bearing names of prospective members are passed out to MCA members during regular meetings. All receiving cards are expected to bring a representative of the firm indicated to the next meeting. Sounds like a good idea.

Mr. Lucas, representative of AA Wire Products Co., who has been a leader of such developments as Economy-Lok and other innovations in reinforcement for masonry walls, discussed crack control before a recent meeting of the Milwaukee chapter, Construction Specifications Institute.

Bert W. Harrington, San Francisco, discussed "High Lift Grouting Methods" before a recent meeting of architects and engineers in Phoenix. This is the method in which Oscar Person, MCA member of Burlingame, Calif., had a big hand in developing. It uses brick walls as concrete forms.

Miam A. Blaser of the Arizona Masonry Guild in Phoenix, is the envy of his colleagues. Working for him are James Stockton, apprentice who placed second in the national contest last month in Detroit, and Don Blazer, who ranked high in Arizona apprentice competitions.
