UNION ASSETS 1.5 BILLION
Assets of 1.5 billion dollars were held by labor unions according to the Department of Labor in 1960, Secretary of Labor Arthur J. Goldberg has announced. These unions-local, national and other types also reported total liabilities of 224 million dollars, leaving net assets of more than 1.3 billion dollars.
These figures are contained in the publication "Union Financial Statistics" released today by Secretary Goldberg. They are based on statistics compiled by the Bureau of Labor Management Reports from the first year of financial reports required to be filled by most labor unions under the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act. For the most part, welfare and pension plans funds are not included in the statistics as they are usually company administered.
According to the publication, 75 percent of the 260 national unions had total receipts of under one million dollars. Of these unions, 16 percent had receipts of less than $10,000 while 27 percent had total receipts between $10,000 and $1,000,00.
Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, New York and California, in that order, rank highest in number of unions in the U.S. Each accounts for more than 2,000 local unions. However, locals in New York had the largest total assets (370 million dollars) and the largest total liabilities (9 million dollars). The states showing the smallest number of locals are Hawaii, Delaware, Alaska and South Dakota. Data for the publication were obtained from first year's financial reports filed by 44,530 unions. By classification they represent 41,769 local unions, 260 national bodies, and 474 other types.
