Names New SCPI Director
Robert W. Schlenker of Cleveland, Ohio, has been named Marketing Promotion Director of the Structural Clay Products Institute.

Schlenker, who for three years has been sales manager, Architectural Products Division of Robinson Clay Product Co., Akron, Ohio, assumed his new staff post with CPI on April 20.

Arizona Group Hears Windowless School Concept
PHOENIX, ARIZ. At the March Informational Meeting of the Arizona Masonry Guild approximately 150 architects and engineers heard James E. Bramlett and Fred Buford discuss the Windowless School Concept. Mr. Bramlett is Superintendent of the Spearman, Texas, School District and Mr. Buford is an architect in Dallas, Texas.

It is reported that the school plant in Spearman is of brick masonry construction and to all concerned has proved most favorable. Existing school facilities in this Texas city are of masonry construction but are of the average type construction providing an excellent opportunity to compare the heating and maintenance cost of the new windowless construction concept. It was presented that each school room had two entrance-exits and that outside environment could be seen from the room corridors. A "built-in" tornado shelter was one of the many plus factors of this type of construction.

The April meeting of the Guild featured Insulated Masonry Walls and was presented by the Vermiculite Institute, Chicago, III.


NCMA Wins Patent Suit
As a result of the first litigation initiated by NCMA to protect its patent and trademark rights for SHADOWAL Block, the Association has successfully concluded a suit against former NCMA member, Borgert Concrete Products, Inc. of St. Cloud, Minnesota.

The ruling, handed down by the United States District Court of Minnesota, Sixth Division, was in the form of a Consent Judgment in which the Defendant acknowledged infringement (Continued on page 19)


GARDNER'S MASONRY WINS MEMPHIS AWARD
MEMPHIS, TENN. Their performance in Williamsburg Village, a development of shops and offices in Memphis, Tenn., has won for Gardner's Masonry Contractors this year's top laurels for masonry execution in this area.

Haglund & Venable were the architects and William Culbreath the general contractor. Williamsburg Village was developed by Boyle Investment Co.

Charles W. Ellis, Jr. chairman of the judging committee, announced the winners on behalf of the Memphis Chapter, A. I. A., which cooperates in the competition each year with the Mason Contractors Association of Memphis, MCAA Chapter. Dean Hill and Geral Stratton served with Mr. Ellis. Twenty-two structures were entered in this years competition.

A. I. A. Names Fellows
The American Instiute of Architects will advance 59 members to the rank of Fellow at its 1964 convention June 14-18 in St. Louis, President J. Roy Carroll, Jr., FAIA, announced today.

The honor is bestowed for distinguished performance in architectural design, literature, education, public service or service to the profession. Only 3.7 percent of the Institute's current membership of over 16,000 are Fellows.


MCAA MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE
CHICAGO, ILL. Approximately 50 members attended MCAA's 4th MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE held at the Flying Carpet Inn, near Chicago's O'Hare Airport. During the morning session members were appraised of credit and collection. Daniel M. Garside, Manager Membership Development of the Chicago-Midwest Credit Management Association, discussed Credit, while Bernard Chaitman, Manager, Commercial Claims Department, The Chicago-Midwest Credit Management Association handled the Collection phase. Great emphasis was placed on Collection by Mr. Chaitman and the various tools available to the mason contractor to protect his interest.

At the noon luncheon Walter Derks, Assistant Vice President of Fred S. James & Co., presented a most enlightening discussion on Inurance for Contractors. All new types of coverage were discussed briefly, and special emphasis was placed, by Mr. Derks, (Continued on page 19)
