Plasterers Freeze Wages
The Plastering Institute of Great New York announced the signing of a new contract that provides for a wage freeze in the plastering industry over the next three years. The agreement, signed on June 11 after more than two months of negotiation, holds wages at present levels for plasterers throughout the metropolitan area.
John J. Turi, executive director of the Plastering Institute, described the new agreement as "a double-barrel victory", not only for management and labor in the plastering industry but for the people of New York. "Not only have we sought to insure the leading position of plaster; we are also insuring New Yorkers against the inroads of substitute materials."
Among the six major Skilled Building Trades whose wage scales are regularly listed, the plasterers' hourly rate in New York City stands at $5.55 per hour, or second lowest. With benefits added, the plasterers rank fourth of the six. Except for a nominal 8-10c adjustment to cover increased costs of health insurance, the new contract makes no changes in the former fringe benefits.
In addition to holding the line at present wage levels, the new contract also modifies several provisions which in the past have governed on-site working conditions, hiring practices and work force regulations. Advances in plastering methods and procedures have made it possible to adopt these changes without sacrificing the traditional standards and quality of the City's plaster work, according to Mr. Turi.
