DISABILITY PROGRAM

Who are the 850,000 disabled workers receiving monthly benefits under the social security disability program?

In terms of the major impairments, 29% have heart and circulatory disorders; 16% have diseases of the nervous system and sense organs; and 13% have mental disorders.

Only 5% are under 35 years of age: 41% are between 35 and 54; and 51% are 55 to 64 years of age.

Twenty-two percent of the disabled workers are women.

Benefits are based on the worker's average earnings in work covered by social security. The monthly benefit payable to a disabled worker now ranges from $40 to $127; the maximum benefit a family can receive is $254 monthly.

Recent changes in the law have made it easier for some workers to qualify with respect to the covered work requirement. A disability period can now be established as far back as 1941. If you think you qualify inquire at your local office.

A new booklet "The Social Security Disability Insurance Program Facts and Figures", is available free at your social security district office.

They say experience is the bes teacher, and considering what it costs it should be.
