Develop Wall Cost Chart
The Facing Tile Institute, composed of companies which manufacture 89% of all American structural glazed ware, has just produced a Wall Cost Comparison Chart. This Chart enables architects, builders, estimators and building owners to quickly compare the cost in labor and material of any two of 38 wall types regularly used in commercial and institutional construction.
According to Mr. John A. Stelle, President of FTI, "The specifications for each wall are based on 100 square feet of surface and are derived from material and labor costs now prevailing in 20 major American urban markets."
"For many years there has been a real need for such a Chart," Mr. Stelle commented, "but wide regional variations in the cost of materials, and especially labor, apparently made it impossible to produce a chart that would have national application. After carefully studying this situation, the Technical Committee of FTI discovered that in recent years enough data had been assembled in the form of government statistics and reputable private cost references such as Means, Walker's and Tamblyn's to arrive at valid national averages for labor and material costs."
"Before the Chart went to press, our figures were reviewed and authenticated by the nationally-known firm of McKee-Berger-Manseuto."
"In addition to giving cost information, the Chart enables the user to select the best material for his purpose by providing specific data on other factors such as flame spread, fuel and toxic fume contribution, heat and sound transmission and fade resistance."
The headquarters office of Facing Tile Institute is located at 333 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60601. Telephone (312) 236-0633.
Form New Industry Council
Formation of a Concrete Industries Council has been announced by eight national organizations having a mutual interest in advancing the uses of concrete.
They are the Concrete Pipe Associations, Inc.; Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute; Expanded Sale, Clay and Slate Institute; National Concrete Masonry Association; National Ready Mixed Concrete Association; Portland Cement Association; Prestressed Concrete Institute; and Wire Reinforcement Institute.
"Purpose of the Council is the advancement of concrete in all its forms by coordination of attack on problems that affect more than one organization, and by elimination of duplication of effort wherever possible," the membership explained in a joint statement.
Manual On Fire Resistance
The latest edition of a comprehensive manual on fire resistive constructions has now been printed by the Gypsum Association. Sound control data is also furnished for many of the assemblies described.
Information is provided on products used in residential, commercial, industrial and institutional building. Materials are illustrated and hourly test ratings provided for partitions, floor ceiling assemblies, columns, beams, girders and trusses and gypsum roof deck assemblies.
Over 43 pages of easy-to-read tables are included in the new manual, listing fire tested assemblies ranging from one to four hours of protection. Data on sound transmission loss ratings, thickness of assemblies, weight and construction details is also provided.
