Modern Prestressed Concrete by H. Kent Preston, Chief Product Engineer, Construction Materials, CF&I Steel Corporation, and Norman J. Sollenberger, Chairman, Department of Civil and Geological Engineering, Princeton University. 332 pages plus index, 168 illustrations; 6x9 McGraw-Hill $13.50. Publication date: June, 1957.

Modern Prestressed Concrete furnishes the structural engineer with all the information required for the design of safe, economical prestressed concrete structures.

In the book, designed for self-study, the authors present a simplified procedure for shear analysis in the design of buildings the arithmetic is reduced to a simple multiplication of a constant (which is given for various points along the member) by the already known applied loads and dimensions of the beam or girder. Complete step-by-step design examples of typical bridge and building members are provided and pertinent parts of applicable codes and specifications are referenced and included in the Appendix. All examples are based on the latest editions of Codes, Specifications and Recommended Practices. Construction methods and equipment are discussed and illustrated in a manner that will enable the engineer to design members which can be fabricated economically and also help the fabricator to understand the factors which require his special attention.

Among the topics covered in the fifteen chapters are: Properties peculiar to prestressed concrete; design procedure; design of a prestressed concrete bridge; pretensioned method; post-tensioned method; design of a post-tensioned girder, compression members; and typical structures and their components. The appendixes contain excerpts from ACI Standard Building Code requirements, excerpts from "Suggested Design of Joints and Connections in Prestressed Structural Concrete," derivation of simplified formulas for shear design used in design examples, a chart for determining maximum moments from AASHO loadings at points other than mid-span, and derivation of proof that the ration of M/V is the same for design and ultimate loads.

All prestressing methods now in general use in the United States are described and illustrated in such a manner that the reader can design a structure that is practical to construct. An engineer can choose an appropriate example from the book and make a parallel set of calculations simply using the dimensions and loadings for his member in place of those used in the book.

H. Kent Preston has been closely associated with prestressed concrete research and development since 1944 and has been an active committee member in various professional groups. Preston is a registered professional engineer and Fellow, Amercian Society of Civil Engineers.

Prior to his association with Princeton University, Professor Sollenberger spent a number of years as a Senior Design Engineer with John A. Roebling's Sons Corporation where his responsibilities involved the design of prestressed concrete and cable structures and field supervision of the erection of the cable systems of some of the cable structures. He is a registered professional engineer and Fellow, American Society of Civil Engineers.
