Acme Acquires Nolan Browne Co.

Acme Brick Company has purchased the Nolan Browne Company of Dallas. The transaction was announced jointly by Bill Darwin, vice president and general manager of Acme Brick's Southwest Division and by Nolan Browne, Jr., president of the Nolan Browne Company.

Combined sales for 1968 are expected to approximate $30 million, according to Darwin.

Nolan Browne Company dates from 1934, making it the oldest concrete-block producer in Dallas. The Browne Company has been a franchise manufacturer since 1956 of Spectra-Glaze masonry units, which are concrete blocks with a glazed surface available in 48 colors.

Acme Brick Company, headquartered in Fort Worth, is the nation's largest producer of face brick. Since 1891, the company has grown to an operation with 20 plants in six states-Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas.

This venture is Acme Brick's first acquisition outside the structural clay products field. It is a step in a diversification program to provide customers a more complete line of masonry products, reports Darwin. The transaction was for an undisclosed amount of cash.

Nolan Browne, Jr. and Joe Phillips, vice president of Nolan Browne Company, will continue in the operation, said Darwin, as will all other key employees of the pioneer concrete-block firm.

Located in a suburban shopping center, this banking facility intrigues the casual visitors with their lacy solar screen walls designed by the architect to give privacy, yet lend enchantment to the total project.

Stepping within the area to transact business, the depositor must cross an arched brick bridge, spanning a pool landscaped to give a wooded area feeling remote from the outside business world.

Reinforced on the underside of the brick units within the mortar joints where applicable, this solar screen wall was designed to withstand wind forces and seismic action.

This design proved so popular with the bank executives, three additional branches were built in Oregon and Washington within a few months.

mix in a factory and then delivering it dry to a construction site. It is then easily converted through automatic equipment into the desired material.

The olive green mortar being used at 909 Third Avenue was created from a sample of Moor-O-Matic wall paint. The charcoal brown tint was created from various samples of paint and materials.
