Structural Concrete, an up-to-date reference for practicing structural and civil engineers, outlines the principal theories which lie behind current design methods for structural concrete (including prestressed concrete) and relates them to observed behavior of concrete and steel. Special attention is given to the properties of concrete, i.e., behavior under combined stress.
Other special features include a discussion of recent advances in the yield-line theory and the behavior of numbers under combinations of axial force, bending moment, shear force, and torsion. Numerous worked-out examples, designed to illustrate principles and test understanding of them, are included.
After an introductory chapter, the book covers the following topics: properties of concrete and reinforcement; elastic theory of reinforced concrete beams and columns, elastic theory of prestressed concrete beams; ultimate strength theory of reinforced and prestressed beams and columns; shear and torsion; yieldline theory of reinforced concrete slabs; philosophy of limit state design.
R. Paul Johnson, the author, is a graduate of Cambridge University, where he has been a lecturer in Engineering since 1959. Professor Johnson has been awarded a Miller prize by the Institution of Civil Engineers and al Research Diploma by the Institution of Structural Engineers.
