The low bid allowed all 12 omit al-
ternates to be retained-quality feat-
ures that helped insure the project's
success: it was completely rented out
before the first brick was laid.
Median Wages Rise
Washington, D. C. The median
wage increase falling due in 1969 un-
der contracts now in force is 14.4
cents an hour, according to a study
just released by The Bureau of Nation-
al Affairs, Inc. (BNA). The increase
is the highest in the twelve years BNA
has been compiling deferred wage in-
crease data, and represents a gain of
3.2 cents over increases falling due
in 1968.
Deferred increases will continue to
carry weight in negotiations in the
year ahead, according to BNA. In ad-
dition, provision in some contracts for
cost-of-living increases or escalator
clauses will continue to boost wage
adjustments above the amounts desig-
nated as deferred wage increases.
The construction industry, within
which deferred wage increases are
higher and more numerous than in
any other industry, played a partic-
ularly significant role in the current
year. Excluding construction, the me-
dian deferred increase in 1969 comes
to 12.3 cents-2.1 cents lower than the
all-industry figure. In 1968, exclusion
of construction dropped the all-indus-
try figure by 1.0 cents, while the re-
duction in 1967 was 0.6 cent.
By industry, construction is out in
front with a deferred wage increase of
40.0 cents an hour due in 1969.
