General Contractor: Stewart & Hinan
Mason Contractor: Abe Dick Masonry
This is the building the judges singled out for special recognition because of its pioneering contribution. The strength of the structure lies not only in its simple, unpretentious appearance but also in its carefully considered planning and the esthetically pleasing use of a traditional material structural clay tile-with a fresh feeling.
Contributing to the success of the general exterior appearance are the sloping roofs, the concrete podium, which gives emphasis to the well-lighted interior walkway, and the color and scale of the tile blocks.
This is, in the fullest sense, a masonry building. The warm, earth-colored structural tile is load-bearing and is exposed inside and out, giving the effect of a one-fabric building. The floors and stairs are precast concrete and were laid in place like large masonry units.
