SIGN IMI PROMOTION TRUST
A trust fund to finance the promotion of masonry construction in the United States and Canada has been established by the Mason Contractors Association of America and the Bricklayers, Masons & Plasterers International Union. The agreement creating the International Masonry Institute Promotion Trust was signed in Washington, D.C., on July 22, by Allen Young, MCAA President, and Thomas F. Murphy, BM&PIU President.
MCAA President Young said the signing was "a historic occasion for the masonry industry. Many of us in MCAA and the BM&PIU have been working toward this for a long time. It is another example of the outstanding cooperation that exists between the union and mason contractors. I'm sure that through the promotion efforts which are contemplated, we will increase work opportunities for union members and job opportunities for MCAA members.
"Now that the IMI Promotion Trust is officially established," he added, "the next step is to finance it by contributing to it one cent for each hour of work performed by the bricklayer. I urge all of our members to have this financing provision written into their collective bargaining agreements as soon as possible.
"If we had collected this one cent per hour last year, we would have had a minimum of $1 million to promote masonry construction. This is a lot of money. However, our competitors in the building industry are spending many times this much to promote their prod- (Continued on page 28)
