PCMA Elects Officers
The Pennsylvania Concrete Masonry Association has elected its 1970-1971 officers and directors.
The new officers are: (President) J. David Nyce of the Nyce Crete Co., Landsdale. Pa.; (Vice-president) George B. Daughenbaugh of Burrell Construction and Supply Co., Greensburg. Pa.: (Secretary) James V. Gianoni of A. Duchini, Inc., Erie, Pa.. and (Treasurer) Si Lewis of the Scranton Building Block Co., Scranton, Pa.
The two new directors of the organization are: Edward D. Ekas of the R. I. Lampus Co., Springdale, Pa., and Wilson DeVecchis of E. DeVecchis & Sons, Mt. Union, Pa.

Robert Fragasso has been appointed to the newly created position of Credit Manager and Office Manager for Pittsburgh Corning Corp. at its general office in Pittsburgh.

Darrell Manning, 20, of Dallas, shows his wife Janis, Dallas Congressman Earle Cabell, Dee Brown, president of Dee Brown Masonry, Inc., Dallas, and Jimmy Dickerson, apprentice instructor, the form he used to win the Texas state apprentice bricklaying contest in Dallas Memorial Auditorium.
Darrell Manning, 20, of Dallas, was named Texas champion apprentice bricklayer in a contest held April 11, at Dallas Memorial Auditorium. Manning competed against 12 other finalists from Fort Worth, Austin, Longview, Galveston, Houston and Lubbock.
Underwood Joins Stearns
Preparatory to a major expansion program which will substantially enlarge its sales force and greatly extend its service operations, Stearns Manufacturing Company of Flat Rock, Michigan, has appointed Walter W. Underwood to manage its Block Machinery Division.
Underwood's extensive background includes 13 years as Executive Director of the National Concrete Masonry Association in Washington, D. C.
"We are delighted to have a man of Mr. Underwood's caliber to head up our block machinery operation," a Stearns spokesman said. "Under his leadership we plan to make our Stearns-Matic the best serviced block-making machine in the country. It is already the fastest and certainly the best engineered."
Brinton Barnes of Fort Worth was the runner-up. Both Manning and Barnes received $300 to pay expenses of attending the Southern Apprenticeship Conference held in Hot Springs, Ark. plus a full and a half set of bricklayer tools respectively. Commie Lancaster of Dallas, who was the third place winner, also received a set of bricklayer tools.
Manning was presented a trophy by Dallas Congressman Earle Cabell who has made the winning presentation on two previous occasions since the contest was started in Dallas in 1946. The local union also received a trophy.
The 21½ hour contest was sponsored jointly by the Associated Masonry Contractors of Texas and the Texas State Conference of Brick Masons and Plasterers International Union of America.
Manning who now earns $4.49 an hour will get $5.58 an hour when he completes his three-year apprenticeship. "I just like laying bricks. It's not just the money," said Manning, an employee of Bock Construction Company, Dallas.
