William F. Hummel of
Cincinnati Retires
William F. Hummel, long-time veteran of the construction industry, has retired as board chairman of The David Hummel Building Co. of Cincinnati.
His contributions to the industry were many. In addition to holding various positions with MCAA, he had been vice president of Allied Constructions Industries, and president of the Mason Contractors Association of Greater Cincinnati as well as the Unit Masonry Association.
Starting with Hummel Building Co. in 1925, Bill's 45 years of devoted service contributed to many landmark buildings in the Cincinnati area, including the Union Terminal, Western & Southern Life Insurance Co. Building, St. Gregory Seminary, Spring Grove Mausoleum, and St. Peter in Chains Cathedral.
The David Hummel Building Co. was established in 1850 as a cut stone fabricating and contracting firm. At the turn of the century, masonry contracting was added as an integral operation. In 1960 the stone plant was sold and the company moved to Bond Hill where it now is engaged in stone and unit masonry contracting and restoration.
Present officers are David H. Swedes, president: Frank G. Moratschek, vice president, and Merle E. Cordes, secretary-treasurer.
The unusually poor growing season for corn brought about some unusual bragging. One farmer reportedly said: "I never saw such a season. My corn isn't an inch high!"
His neighbor added: "An inch? Why, the sparrows have to kneel down to eat mine!"
