MCAM Hears Brackhahn
Richard Brackhahn, a leading attorney specializing in the labor field, was the featured speaker at the May 10 monthly dinner meeting of the Mason Contractors Association of Memphis. He spoke on government and its responsibilities to its citizens.
John R. Gardner, vice president of MCAM, commented: "It was refreshing for all present to hear that there are still those who support the ideals on which this country was built. The large turnout of mason contractors, foremen and suppliers enjoyed an evening of comradeship, an excellent dinner and an enlightening speaker."
Start Award Program
Presenting the first submission fee for the Mason Contractor Association of Greater Chicago's first "Excellence in Masonry Award Program" is Clarence Weummel, member of the architectural firm of Mayes, Williams & Partners. Receiving the check on behalf of the association is Executive Secretary Jan Sutherland. Chuck Anderson, SGM Corp. and chairman of the Masonry Awards Program, smiles his approval. Applications are still being taken for this event. Fee deadline is September 1, and the submission date October 1. The program will be staged in conjunction with MCAGC's annual dinner dance at the Regency Hyatt House, November 27. Tickets and information may be obtained by contacting the association office at 297-3424 in Park Ridge, III.
Gardner Symonds Dies
Gardiner Symonds, one of America's leading and most resourceful industrial executives, died June 1 in Methodist Hospital, Houston, Texas after a brief illness from a heart ailment. He was 67.
Mr. Symonds was architect and builder of Tenneco Inc., a giant multi-industry company with headquarters in Houston and operations and interests throughout the world. He became Tenneco's first president in 1943, and under his leadership the Company grew into an industrial complex with $4.3 billion in assets and major operations in manufacturing, natural gas transportation, oil, chemicals, packaging, agriculture and land development.

The appointment of James R. "Randy" Thomas to the post of Quad-City area sales representative and the promotion of James P. Weinhandl to Minnesota area sales representative was announced by A. Gregory Gutsgell, vice president-marketing. Dewey Portland Cement Co., Martin Marietta Corp.
This year's income tax return costs the Internal Revenue Service-and the taxpayer an average of $8.65 to process, according to 1971 budget figures. This may be a bargain, however. Next year the average cost will be $9.40. The 1972 budget includes more than $1 billion for the IRS which is expected to process over 111 million returns.
F. K. Borden, Jr. has been elected President of Brick & Tile Service, Inc. (SCPI Region 7B). Other officers elected were: J. V. Isenhour, Vice President; William Coleman, Treasurer and Corb Garton, Secretary.
The Portland Cement Association has named George R. White Director of its Marketing Communications Department. The Marble Institute of America was honored at the recent CSI convention for its new Marble Design Manual which was published in late 1970. MIA Executive Director Don A. Hagerich accepted the Award.
The Mason Contractors Association of Greater Chicago has announced that Duffey Construction Co., 15W726 Lexington Ave., Elmhurst, III. has been voted into membership. Goldblatt Tool Co. has released their 1971 Trowel Trades Tool catalog. The states of Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee will hold their annual summer meeting at the Broadwater Beach Hotel, Biloxi, Miss., on July 8-10.
