History Made In Ontario With First Province Wide Agreement

History was made in the Province of Ontario, Canada, with the successful conclusion of negotiations for a province wide agreement between employers and the Ontario Provincial Conference of the B.M. & P.I.U. The new agreement is the first ever province wide agreement for a major construction trade and will replace most of the local agreements which varied greatly in format, wording and conditions. Four locals in Hamilton, Windsor, Sarnia and Thunder Bay, where local agreements do not expire until April 30, 1973, were not covered in the first agreement but will become party to it with renewal on May 1, 1973.

The new agreement standardizes wording and most conditions across the province and consolidated over twenty separate local agreements into a single document to provide uniform conditions for contractors and employees in the Masonry Industry.

The sixteen man negotiating committee for the Ontario Provincial Conference of the B.M. & P.I.U. was headed by Dan Demonte, President, Ontario Provincial Conference, assisted by Don Williams, Canadian Vice President, B.M. & P.I.U. The employers were represented by Chairman, John Tiefenback, London & District Construction Association and Vice Chairmen Vino DeCarli, President, Tile, Marble and Terrazzo Guild of Ontario and Neil Fraser, Executive Director of Ontario Masonry Contractors Association and Canadian Masonry Contractors Association.

Negotiations took place over a period of five months and were successfully concluded before the expiration of local agreements on April 30, 1972. The official signing of the new agreement took place late in May and was witnessed by the Hon. Fernand Guindon, Minister of Labour, Province of Ontario.

A major inclusion in the new agreement is provision for an Ontario Masonry Industry Promotion Trust Fund which will allow Ontario to participate in International Masonry Institute and coordinate the promotion of masonry work for the entire province.

OSHA Glove Regulation: No Standards as Yet

At last count in the Federal Register, there were nine descriptions of operations for which the Occupational Safety & Health Act requires gloves to be worn. But nowhere is there any mention of specific standards to which work gloves must perform. Performance standards have been established by OSHA for other protective and safety equipment, so performance standards for work gloves may be only a matter of time.

While OSHA regulations do not, as yet, specifically indicate performance standards for work gloves, this does not mean that an employer can be careless about the quality and types of gloves he must provide his workers. The selection of the right work gloves can pay benefits in cost savings and provide for less down-time from nuisance hand injuries as well as better work handling and improved employee morale.

If you have questions about OSHA's requirements for work gloves, contact the Work Glove Manufacturers Association, 1717 Howard St., Evanston, III., 60202.
