Colorado Holds Fourth Annual Conference
An estimating seminar for mason contractors and a first-aid safety class for their key men highlighted activities at the 5th annual conference of the Colorado Mason Contractors Association at the Regency Rodeway Inn in Denver, April 8.
This was the first year that the conference was held without booths and exhibits. Association members decided instead to place greater emphasis on educational aspects, hence the sessions on estimating and first aid. "The entire conference," said publicity chairman Mac Terry, "was devoted to helping the contractor in the area of estimating and enabling the bricklayer to qualify for the first-aid card required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration."
Some 200 bricklayers attended the session on first aid designed to help them comply with new OSHA regulation.
David "Okie" Wilson presents Bricklayer of the Year award to Billy White, the second annual such award given by Bricklayers' Union Local #1 of Denver. A veteran bricklayer, White was a member of the arbitration committee which negotiated the local's first health and welfare plan and also has served on the union's board of directors and apprentice committee.
Approximately 100 contractors attended the session on "Masonry Estimating for a Profit" presented by Jerry Pope, head estimator for Hensel Phelps Company, which ranks among the top 100 general contractors in the United States.
