Huron Fights Pollution

Huron Cement division of National Gypsum Co. has told the Michigan Air Pollution Control Commission that its $2.5 million program for eliminating air pollution at part of the division's operations in Alpena is on target.

"Additionally," said David G. Stenberg, Huron president headquartered in Southfield, Mich., "we have undertaken a comprehensive engineering study to precisely determine the extent of the huge capital investment that will be necessary to comply with the commission's overall dust abatement order."


Joint Oregon Meeting

A joint meeting of the Oregon Masonry Guild and the Mason Contractors Association was held in Portland on April 19 in the Holiday Inn of America.

The three-star program covered new techniques in receiving and delivering cement; slide films of Vancouver's tornado, how masonry constructed building reacted and why, and a committee report on metal fireplaces.


Purchase of McNear Co. Announced by Owners

Brad McNear (right) and Robert Thomas announced they have completed negotiations for the purchase of The McNear Co. of San Rafael, Calif., manufacturer of Haydite lightweight aggregate, concrete block and concrete precast products. The two principals, pictured in the company's yard at San Rafael, own the total stock in the new corporation. The new organization will continue to operate existing facilities at McNear Point, San Rafael, with the exception of the lightweight aggregate plant which has ceased operation.
