New Loadbearing Block Marketed for Highrises

A patented new masonry unit called "Ivany Block" is being marketed by George R. Ivany & Associates, Inc. of Cleveland.

Designed for loadbearing highrise buildings, the open-end block features vertical slots in which reinforcing bars are placed and the cavities filled with concrete for unusual strength.

According to George R. Ivany, structural engineer who designed the system, a wall built of Ivany Block can withstand soil pressure from a 10-ft. deep basement that hollow block cannot, and it costs only $2.80 per sq. ft. as compared with more than $4 per sq. ft. for poured concrete walls with conventional framework.

He said the Ivany Block is being used on the Willoughby Hills apartment project presently under way in Cleveland, and that three other large projects will begin soon in Florida and Massachusetts using this system.

He indicated that the block is now fabricated in eight cities from Norfolk to Milwaukee. Well over 300 projects have now been completed using Ivany block, many of these multi-story apartment buildings, Ivany said.

More information may be obtained from Ivany's firm at 1468 W. 9th St., Cleveland, Ohio 44113.

FTI Reelects Hoover

Noting many positive accomplishments during the year and new activities to be started, members of the Facing Tile Institute reelected Richard E. Hoover president and Robert Burris vice-president at their recent annual meeting at Lake Geneva, Wis.

Hoover is executive vice-president of Stark Ceramics, Inc., Canton, Ohio, and Burris is president of Arketex Ceramic Corp., Brazil, Ind.

Against a background feeling that architects, contractors, specifiers and purchasing agents are overlooking the many plus merits of glazed structural tile and glazed brick for interior and exterior constructions, the FTI launched a vigorous action program aimed at these important segments. Involved are new government and distributor relations programs, publication of four-color literature illustrating product values and technical specifications, and a reemphasized promotion program supporting the industry's E-Tile line and newly approved epoxy mortar grouting.

The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it. Theodore Roosevelt.
