# MCAGC to Sponsor 3rd "Excellence" Program
The Mason Contractors Association of Greater Chicago will hold its 3rd annual "Excellence in Masonry" awards program at the Marriott Hotel in suburban Rosemont, III. on December 1.
The 1973 program chairman is Jack Bartsch, sales producer with the Assurance Agency in Arlington Heights, III. "The past two years' programs have met with so much success that we are anticipating an even better program this year," Bartsch said.
# Apprenticeship Contest
Bricklayer contestants from seven cities gathered in Portland, Ore., recently for the Washington-Oregon State Conference of Bricklayers annual apprentice contest in the parking lot of the Sheraton Motor Inn.
A record turnout of mason contractors, suppliers and friends of the industry were on hand for the event sponsored by the Portland Mason Trades Apprenticeship & Training Committee.

The Construction Tools Division of Omark Industries, Portland, Ore., has appointed James R. Mreen eastern sales manager and Darryl Kallesen western sales manager Jerome B. York has been elevated from vice president of the Hertz Truck Division to president of Hertz Equipment Rental Corp., New York City... Howard W. Smith has been appointed convention/advertising manager by the American Concrete Institute, Detroit, Mich. He replaces J. Roman Babiak who has been advanced to assistant to the director of education Dr. James M. Gaidis has been named group leader for research & technical service on Bituthene waterproofing and Thomas E. Murray will be a group leader supervising research & technical service for the Horn-Servicised product lines of Grace Construction Products Division, Cambridge, Mass.
# Bumper Stickers Promote Masonry in Michigan
Bricklayer Franjo "Frank" Mutavdzija (center), a member of Local 2, Detroit, was the winner of the "Name the Bumper Sticker" contest sponsored by the Masonry Institute of Michigan. His winning entry, which earned him and his wife a weekend trip to a Michigan resort, was "Brick & Block Beauty & Brawn." Congratulating him are Clarence D. # Dodge Names Two V.P.'s
Richard S. McQuillen has been named vice president for development and Wesley A. Fraser appointed vice president for marketing in the F. W. Dodge Division of McGraw-Hill Information Systems Co., New York, N.Y.
The firm, an authority on the construction market, produces a variety of marketing, management, statistical and economic-forecasting services for the construction industry, including the daily Dodge Reports on individual projects.
McQuillen will be responsible for expanding the division's products and services through internal developments, acquisitions, joint ventures and international expansion. He has been vice president for marketing since 1970.
Fraser will be in charge of developing the division's overall marketing policies and programs, as well as administering its marketing department's activities in such areas as sales, advertising and promotion. He has been the department's marketing manager since 1971.

# Building Journal Lauds Loadbearing Masonry
Brick Is Making It (Because of the Way They're Making Brick). The third little pig said, "Nix on sticks; 1 think I'll build my house with Bricks!" Quipped the second. "This could be the start of something big!"
That's the headline and the lead-in on a major six-page article in the August issue of Buildings extolling the virtues of brick and loadbearing masonry. The lavishly illustrated, full-color feature depicts some of the major new buildings throughout the nation that have utilized the loadbearing masonry system.
The article concludes: "More and more cost-conscious developers are looking at the inherent savings that are basic to brick. The frosting on the cake is its esthetic appeal, and who can deny brick is beautiful?"
# Fireplace Seminar Held
A seminar on constructing fireplaces was held recently in Victoria, B.C., and included all the inspection people from the Lower Island, including fire marshals and fire department heads. Two fireplaces were constructed-one along proper construction guidelines and one along the accepted norm to illustrate the "whys and wherefores" of building a fireplace.
# Recycling Helps to Build a House in Richmond, Va.
A quality American suburban home, conventional in appearance but the first ever constructed primarily of recycled materials, will be ready for occupancy in Richmond, Va., after a short public display period.
The four-bedroom tri-level has a family room with fireplace, attached garage, two and a half baths, plus the standard assortment of rooms, but this home is like no other ever built.
