OSHA Issues Booklet On Employer Training
A 28-page booklet to help employers determine training requirements contained in federal job safety and health standards has been published by the Labor Department. The publication, entitled "Training Requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Standards," was developed to make employers aware of their safety and health training responsibilities under the Williams-Steiger Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. Available at any of the 10 Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Regional Offices, the booklet provides an index to the standards and an excerpt of standards pertaining to training.

Apprenticeship Contest
A state contest sponsored by the Associated Masonry Contractors of Texas to determine the most proficient bricklaying apprentices in the state was held April 7 at the Shamrock Hilton Hotel in Houston. The contestants wore T-shirts with the slogan, "Building a Future In Masonry," arranged for by the State Joint Apprentice Committee. First-year winner was Nathan Hartley of Austin; 2nd-year winner, Keith Skaggas, Austin, and 3rd-year winner, Michael Butts, Houston.

Bricklayer Transition Program a Success
As the Bricklayer Transition Program enters into its fourth year of operation, there is clear indication that it has been a training success for the thousands of ex-GI's who have graduated from its pre-apprenticeship classes. The program was initiated in July, 1970, and is sponsored by the National Association of Home Builders, BM & PIU, and MCAA. Five military sites were initially selected for holding bricklayer transition training. Currently there are 16 military bases throughout the country offering such training for men about to be discharged from military duty. To date more than 3,100 men have been trained in the basic skills of bricklaying through the efforts of the transition program. Approximately 120 men graduate per year at each site where the program is in effect. Class enrollment averages 15 students. The program is funded by the Departments of Labor, Health, Education and Welfare, and Defense. NAHB coordinates and conducts the training in cooperation with MCAA and BM & PIU. Once the men graduate from the six-week class, just prior to their separation from military service, the NAHB Transition Office works toward finding employment for the trained men, again in cooperation with the MCAA and BM & PIU. All MCAA regions throughout the country are cooperating with the program to provide nationwide placement referrals. Much of the credit for the success of the program goes to the cooperation of the military personnel at sites.

Bricklaying Contest
The annual Bricklaying Apprentice Contest sponsored by the Massachusetts State Conference Branch of BM & PIU will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 2, 1973, in the Shoppers World Mall, Framingham, Mass.
