Allgauer's Fireside Restaurant, Northbrook, III. The contemporary feeling of this building does not readily reveal its functional ability to accommodate up to 1,500 persons. The awards selection jury admired the warm, inviting character of this restaurant, which maintains a human, almost residential scale despite its size.

Masonry Excellence Award

More than 350 persons gathered recently for a glittering awards banquet in the Hyatt Regency O'Hare in Chicago to honor award-winning architects. The event was sponsored by the Chicago Masonry Council, the promotional arm of the masonry industry in the eight-county Metropolitan Chicago area. The "Excellence In Masonry" awards program is designed to recognize architects, by their peers, for accomplishment in masonry design and to provide continuing motivation to architects to strive for excellence in design with masonry.

For the recent 1974 awards program, judging was carried out in Washington, D.C. to ensure fairness and a high quality of professional evaluation. Supervising the selection was Maria F. Murray, director of awards programs of the American Institute of Architects. The distinguished awards jury also included M. Elliott Carroll, FAIA; Hugh Newell Jacobsen, FAIA, and Francis D. Lethbridge, FAIA.

Four designs merited "Excellence" awards, with one of the winning designs also receiving the Gold Medal Award. The latter honored the Kelmer Arlington Building, Arlington Heights, Ill., designed by Stanley Tigerman & Associates Ltd. of Chicago. A Gold Medal Award for this project also was presented to the mason contractor, D. H. Johnson Co. (MCAA), Villa Park, III.

Kelmer Arlington Building, Arlington Heights, III. This Gold Medal Award winner met a twofold challenge to create an industrial building that was a visually appealing addition to a suburban community while keeping within a restrictive construction budget (it came out at $10 per square foot). Of all the projects reviewed, this was judged the "most completely successful in its clear, attractive and intelligent response to the needs of its program."
