Jury Comment: In this building the Canadian Legion has set a standard rarely seen in such facilities. A simple, handsome building, human in scale and character, well-sited and in harmony with the surrounding residential community. The building takes full advantage of the existing landscaping, preserving most and adding to it, creating in the process a new building that "belongs."
The interior planning is simple, with a clear sense of organization. A great deal of attention has been paid to the detailing and the careful selection of materials. The abundant use of brick on the inside provides the warm, quiet and friendly character missing in so many similar buildings. The individual rooms were carefully considered and offer interesting accommodation with privacy and a place for personal belongings and personal affairs.

Jury Comment: An interesting architectural "happening" in this dull industrial ghetto of Toronto. "A simple straightforward approach" were the client's instructions to the architect. The architect wisely limited himself to concrete and only one type of concrete block. The building and the materials benefit from this restraint in a dramatic fashion.
The scale and texture of the block contrast nicely with the strength and texture of the concrete frame. The building is well sited overhang on the south, maximum glass on the north, and minimum glass on the west. While the landscaping was minimal and could have been bolder, it is nevertheless a very pleasant oasis in a desert of gray.

Jury Comment: Perhaps the single most interesting aspect of this building is its relationship to the street. While the forms and materials when viewed out of context appear somewhat unrelated, they all go to make this rather large structure virtually lose itself on a street of small houses.
The social spaces were sensitively handled and totally in character. The siting of the building to create a future court off the dining room is an excellent use of a small property.
