Apprenticeship Contest
Held In Fort Worth
Winners in three categories of apprenticeship were judged in recent competition sponsored by Local #6 of Brickmasons in the shop facilities of Southwest High School in Fort Worth, Texas.
First, second and third prizes were awarded winners in each of the three year levels of apprenticeship. Judged as the top apprentices were: first year, James Lane, Roy McGee and Douglas Helms; second year, Pat Hendricks, Richard White and Dwight Steelman; third year, Ricky Woodridge, Robert B. Harden and Oscar K. Glass.
First place winners were eligible to compete in the Texas State Bricklayers' Apprentice Contest, held this year in Longview on April 30.
Ricky Woodridge's skill with brick and trowel paid off as he was judged top brickmason in third-level apprenticeship competition in Fort Worth.
Mich. Masonry Council Holds Conference
Masonry design for energy conservation and fire safety were the prime topics of discussion at the recent "M (for masonry) Day" program sponsored by the Michigan Masonry Council. More than 170 persons, most of them architects and structural engineers, attended the day-long function which was held in Dearborn.
The program, which attracted local TV and radio coverage, included three hours of technical sessions, a luncheon speaker from the Department of Housing and Urban Development in Washington, and a masonry industry trade show.
Highlight of the technical program was the introduction of the Michigan Masonry Council's new consensus specification on sizing masonry walls for fire resistance ratings. The new specification, two years in development by an ad hoc industry committee, gives the designer a reliable method of determining the fire ratings of various masonry wall types without the need for expensive testing.

Ebeling (left), president of MCAA, and Edgar Boettcher Jr. (right), president of the Michigan Mason Contractors Association, greet Warren Lasko of HUD, the luncheon speaker at the "M Day" program sponsored by the Michigan Masonry Council, and Elwin M. Pell, professional engineers with the Portland Cement Association: Jerry Stockbridge, Chicago area consulting engineer: Alan H. Yorkdale, P.E., Brick Institute of America; W. Thomas Munsell, P.E., Masonry Institute of Michigan, and Warren Lasko, acting deputy assistant secretary of HUD.
Robert F. Ebeling, Detroit area mason contractor and current president of MCAA, had this to say of "M Day"; "It was the best thing ever done by the masonry industry in the state of Michigan."
Indiana Honors Masonry with "Week"
Through the efforts of the Masonry Institute of Central Indiana, Governor Otis R. Bowen of Indiana declared May 1-7 as "Masonry Week In Indiana." This first-time proclamation honored the state's masonry industry and the annual scholarship to the Ball State School of Architecture and Planning.
