OSHA, ANSI Hold Meeting

A meeting of technical experts from the Labor Department's Occupational Safety & Health Administration and the American National Standards Institute was held January 10 in Washington, D.C.

The group reviewed technical specification of the voluntary ANSI standard for temporary floor and wall openings, flat roofs, stairs, railings and toe boards. The discussion was intended to help define and identify those provisions which may be appropriate for further consideration and the development of supportive and other pertinent data.


Nat'l Gypsum Earnings Up

Dallas-based National Gypsum Co. has reported net earnings for 1977 rose 3% to a record high of $36.7 million or $2.25 per share. This compares with $27.4 million, or $1.68 per share in 1976. Sales increased 22% to $748 million from $613 million the year previous.


Keystone Sales Rise

Keystone Portland Cement Co., Allentown. Pa.. has announced sales of $16,674,000 in 1977 with net income of $177,000 or 33 cents a share.

Unusually good masonry craftsmanship can be found in the St. Charles Borromeo Church in Sacramento. Radius corners were used throughout the building. Even though larger brick would have saved money, small brick were chosen because of the pleasing over-all appearance they would achieve.

Pilasters were indicated for the 35 ft. high wall at one end, but a 15 in. grouted wall was used instead so that the smooth surface of brick would not be interrupted either inside or outside. Twenty-four columns are made with a specially designed concrete block. This method proved to cost less than either pre-cast or cast-in-place.
