St. Charles Borromeo Church

Architect: Harry J. Devine, Inc.
General and Mason Contractor: John Jackson Masonry (MCAA)
Unusually good masonry craftsmanship can be found in the St. Charles Borromeo Church in Sacramento. Radius corners were used throughout the building. Even though larger brick would have saved money, small brick were chosen because of the pleasing over-all appearance they would achieve.
Pilasters were indicated for the 35 ft. high wall at one end, but a 15 in. grouted wall was used instead so that the smooth surface of brick would not be interrupted either inside or outside. Twenty-four columns are made with a specially designed concrete block. This method proved to cost less than either pre-cast or cast-in-place.
