The jury again was "impressed with the adaptive use of the existing structures. The use of brick and glass in sweeping lines and well designed areas of masonry resulted in a pleasing yet strong architectural character. The choice of masonry for the opaque portions of the veneer, used in a straightforward application of this material, gives this project its highly pleasing stature."
Robert R. Lackney, AIA, head of SSOE's architectural department, said, "By going the restoration route rather than building new, we were able to achieve a 1980 building at 1950 prices. We designed in brick because it is a warm material, it is functional, and it relates to the scale of people."
Completed in February, 1976, the building provides 48,000 square feet of space at a cost of $1.2 million, or $25 per square foot.
Lackney explained that after the original limestone was removed from the existing buildings, a jumbo brick (4" x 4" x 12") in an orange earthtone was used to provide the new facade. The brick is backed up with batt insulation and 8" standard concrete masonry units.
The brick design carries through to the interior walls of the building. Brick pavers also were used extensively. Bullnose concrete masonry units were turned sideways to form the window sills of the building.
In recognition of the awards event, and of the technical design seminar which preceded the awards banquet, Ohio Governor James A. Rhodes proclaimed November 8 as "Masonry Day In Northwestern Ohio."

Musser, secretary-treasurer of Rooney, Musser & Associates, Findlay, Ohio, and Robert L. Storer, president of S. A. Storer & Sons Company, Toledo. Lackney accepted the award for the design of his firm's corporate headquarters building, and Musser for the design of the general offices of Ohio Farmers, Inc., in Fostoria. Storer was honored as the mason contractor on both projects. Making the presentation is John Luscombe, president of the Toledo Chapter, American Institute of Architects.
