14th Ontario Architectural Design Awards

AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
Joseph Shepard Building (Government of Canada)
Mississauga, Ontario

Architects: DuBois & Associates, associated with Shore Tilbe Henschel Irwin Peters: Consulting Engineer: Robert Halsall & Associates Ltd.: General Contractor: E.G.M. Cape & Company Ltd.; Mason Contractor: Leader Structures (Toronto) Ltd.: Unit Masonry Producer: Natco Building Products Ltd. Jury Comment: This building deserves the Award of Excellence on the basis of a thorough design solution which recognizes a difficult total design problem. The building makes a significant urban design contribution and sets a design standard for the Sheppard/Yonge redevelopment area, while identifying that area as an emerging subcentre, and all this, not because of its huge size, but in spite of it. The clarity and simplicity of the design belies the complexity of the problem. The oversized masonry units reflect the scale of the building, yet appropriately introduce an element of human scale. The architects are commended for their skill in integrating masonry, metal and concrete.

The architectural firm of DuBois & Associates, in association with Shore Tilbe Henschel Irwin Peters, Architects, are the recipients of the Award of Excellence for 1978 presented by the Ontario Masons' Relations Council. The award recognizes the unit masonry design of the Joseph Shepard Building (Government of Canada) in Willowdale, Ontario.

At ceremonies at the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto on October 26, Macy DuBois, representing the firm of DuBois & Associates, and Alfred Tilbe, representing Shore Tilbe Henschel Irwin Peters, together with Bill Robinson, regional manager, design & construction, Ontario Region, Public Works Canada, who represented the owners, received their awards from Irving Rayman, vice president/ finance and treasurer of the Ontario Association of Architects.

The Award of Excellence plus five Awards of Merit were presented with respect to design and craftsmanship.

The buildings cited have been erected in Ontario within the past four years.

The Five Awards of Merit, in alphabetical order by architectural firm, were presented to the following (also see pictures and descriptions on succeeding pages): Howard D. Chapman and Howard V.
