15th Ontario Architectural Design Awards

AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
West Park Hospital
Toronto, Ontario

Architects: Armstrong & Molesworth: Consulting Engineer: R. Halsell & Associates Ltd.; General Contractor: Eastern Construction: Mason Contractor: Linar Contractors: Unit Masonry Producers: Canada Brick Co. Ltd. and General Concrete Ltd. Jury Comment: The jury was unanimous in its admiration of the design and execution of this building. The masonry is of particular excellence, not only in the choice of brick and sympathetic mortar color but in the all-important attention to detail such as the special quoin brick used on sills and arrises as well as the refined handling of the brick piers. The The concrete paths were sensitively colored to harmonize with the brickwork and landscape. This is a large building which could quite easily have been monumental and oppressive, and which would have been wrong for a place where patients often have an extended sojourn. The solution of domestically scaled linked pavilions belies the bulk of the edifice, especially since the contours and foliage of the site are so well respected and exploited. Within are not endless corridors but nicely staggered linking spaces with particularly good signage. The interior brickwork is consistent and appropriate. The owner, architect and contractor all deserve particular commendation for the great success of this effort.

The architectural firm of Armstrong & Molesworth of Toronto is the recipient of the Award of Excellence for 1979 presented by the Ontario Masons' Relations Council. The firm was recognized for its design of West Park Hospital in Toronto.

Christopher Shepherd, representing the architects, and Dorothy Macham, executive director of West Park Hospital, received their awards from Vladan Milic, immediate past president of the Ontario Association of Architects. The presentations were made at an awards ceremony at the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto, October 25, 1979.

In addition to the Award of Excellence, four Awards of Merit were presented in recognition of superior design and workmanship utilizing unit masonry. This year 35 buildings were submitted by 31 architectural firms for projects they have completed within the last four years.

The four Merit Awards, in alphabetical order by architectural firm, were presented to the following:

* DuBois + Associates, for Grand River Cable TV, Kitchener, Ont.

* Raymond Moriyama, for Whitby Municipal Building, Whitby, Ont.

* Shore Tilbe Henschel Irwin Peters, for McMaster University Science & Engineering Library, Hamilton, Ont.

* Stark Temporale, for Sunquest Vacations offices, Toronto, Ont.

The judging was conducted by three well-known Ontario architects: George D. Gibson, Anthony Butler and Leslie Rebanks, the latter acting as professional advisor to the OMRC and chairman of the jury.

The sponsors of the annual competition, the Ontario Masons' Relations Council, is a unique example of labor-management cooperation. It is an organization representing the Ontario Region of the Clay Brick Association of Canada, the Ontario Provincial Conferences of the International Union of Bricklayers & Allied Craftsmen (BAC), the Ontario Concrete Block Association, and the Ontario Masonry Contractors Association.
