BIA Sees Improvement

For Brick Industry

Construction activity in the industrial and commercial sector will show a slight improvement in the months ahead, according to a new study by the Brick Institute of America.

"The strength that we find in non-residentical construction leads us to conclude that the brick industry will have an impressive year in terms of national brick shipments," noted John P. Gleason BIA president.


Kevin Mitchell Joins

MCAA Administrative Staff

After a lengthy search, MCAA is pleased to announce the addition of Kevin J. Mitchell to its administrative staff at the Association's Executive Office. Kevin will conduct MCAA's 1980 membership campaign and assist with directing the MCAA Educational Trade Show in addition to performing other administrative duties.

Kevin comes to MCAA from the Muscular Dystrophy Association where he served as district director for the Chicago area. A native of Berkeley, Ill., he is a graduate of Western Illinois University. His line of study focused on communications and business administration.


Thomas F. Murphy Retires as President

of BAC, Is Succeeded by John T. Joyce

Thomas F. Murphy, president of the International Union of Bricklayers & Allied Craftsmen (BAC) for the past 13 years, announced at the union's general board meeting in San Diego, Calif., on September 17 that he will resign his post by the end of the year.

John T. "Jack" Joyce, secretary of BAC and its second-ranking officer, will become the union's next president, as provided the Bricklayers' Constitution. Joyce announced that he will appoint treasurer Edward M. Bellucci as secretary and I.. Gerald Carlisle, director of collective bargaining and research, as treasurer. James F. Richardson will continue as first vice president.

Profits Up for Building

Materials Manufacturers

Building products producers in the first quarter of 1979 posted an average profit advance of 35% on a sales gain of 20% compared with the year-ago quarter, according to F. W. Dodge Division of McGraw-Hill Information Systems Co.


Announce Awards Program

For Atlantic Canada

Excellence in architectural design and in craft execution of masonry buildings will be the standards used in the judging for the recently announced Atlantic Architectural Awards for Masonry.

The program will be limited to architects registered with one of the four provincial architects associations in Atlantic Canada and be conducted exclusively for designers of this region. The awards will be presented at a banquet to be held in Halifax in March, 1980.
