Vocational Students to
Travel to Ireland for
Youth Skill Olympics
A select group of young people representing the best of America's vocational students will travel to Cork, Ireland to participate in the 25th annual International Skill Olympics, September 2-18. The 13 U.S. team members will compete with young craftsmen and women from 19 other nations in a test of their vocational skills.
The competition encompasses 13 categories ranging from auto mechanics and bricklaying to sheet metal work and welding. Representing the U.S. in bricklaying will be Steven K. Sawin of Washington, Kans.
All U.S. team members are also members of the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA), the national organization for students in trade, industrial, technical and health occupations education.
The International Skill Olympics originated in 1950 and is headquartered in Madrid, Spain. The U.S. has been represented in the competition by a VICA team since 1975. The 1978 team competed in Pusan, South Korea.
Mason Contractor
William Rainey Dies
William A. Rainey, Jr., head of one of the oldest mason contracting firms in the San Francisco Bay Area, died recently after a long illness. He was 78.
William A. Rainey & Son, the San Francisco company founded by his father in 1901, helped build such local landmarks as the Olympic Club and Shriners Hospital.
Mr. Rainey remained active in the business until his illness in 1977.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of San Rafael; a son, William A. Rainey III of Verdi, Nev.; a sister, Ida Hecker of Burlingame, Calif., and two grandchildren.
Flintkote Consolidation
The Flintkote Co. has announced the consolidation of its cement operations to form a new division known as Flintkote Cement Co. The new entity is comprised of Flintkote-operated cement plants in New York, Kentucky and California.

John J. Graham, former general manager of Flintkote's Glen Falls (N.Y.) Cement Division, will head Flintkote Cement Co. as vice president and general manager with offices in the Stamford, Conn. corporate headquarters.
Virginia Masonry Council
Hosts Second Seminar
The Virginia Masonry Council recently hosted its second seminar of 1979, "Update on Loadbearing Masonry Design," at the Hyatt House in Richmond. The meeting, claimed to be the largest of its kind ever held in Virginia, presented to area architects and engineers the latest design systems presently in use.

Optimism for Future
The 1978 annual report of Penn-Dixie Industries, Inc. highlights the year's events which show the company as overcoming its past difficulties and being on the road to recovery. All of the company's divisions-construction, cement and steel-reported operating profits in 1978.
