buildings. Bodycott explained: "One of the key problems in designing passive solar energy buildings is keeping the trapped heat inside. Heavy masonry does this very well, but the masonry must be insulated from the weather outside. Typically, commercial buildings have masonry on the outside and insulation on the inside. An ideal arrangement for passive solar energy is to reverse that, and put the insulation on the outside. But, up until now, it has been expensive to protect the insulation usually polyesterene board from damage by the weather and from impact.
"Bonsal's Surewall Surface Bonding Cement promises an economical solution." Bodycott continues. "It has been used successfully for years to cover concrete block, eliminating the need for mortar between the block, yet providing a tough exterior coating that attractively conceals the block structure. We'll be using it in this building to provide a similar tough covering over the exterior insulation board, which will be an important advance for passive solar energy design. It's a development of real interest to architects."
Bodycott said the Odell staff is exploring the use of thermal collection tanks within the building to further trap the sun's heat. Design/Joe Sonderman, Inc. of Charlotte has been commissioned by Bonsal to handle the interior design of the new building.
"We believe our new headquarters will be a real showplace for solar energy design and for our products," said Rocky Bonsal, whose grandfather was one of the
founders of the firm. "We feel it's the best possible way to demonstrate our faith in the promise that surface bonding holds as a way to make passive solar design more viable."
Construction on the Bonsal building is scheduled to begin in the spring of 1980 in the Arrowood Southern Executive Park on Charlotte's south side, near Interstate 77. In addition to administrative offices, it will house the company's research and development laboratory. Construction is expected to be completed in the Spring of 1981.
Bonsal manufactures pre-packaged cement and related products, including Surewall Surface Bonding Cement and Sakrete pre-mixed concrete, in six plants throughout the Southeast. The firm is also a major source of sand and gravel for the construction industry in North Carolina. Bonsal's current headquarters are in Lilesville, N.C., 60 miles east of Charlotte.
Preservation Saves Energy in Construction
Once energy is used in construction, it cannot be recovered. Eight brick embody the energy equal to what is provided by a gallon of gasoline. Saving the brick in a building instead of replacing them means current energy sources can be used for other purposes.
