Of the American Savings facility the judges said, "It promises spatial interest and a pleasant environment. Quality workmanship is apparent." Their comment about the Cathedral of the Madeleine: "The care expressed in this restoration of a significant historical building is to be commended. Cast stone, retooling and resetting of existing stone have been done with skill and dedication."
Awards also were given to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the masonry industry. Honored as Outstanding Mason Contractor was Boyd R. Child of Child Construction Co., Salt Lake City. Chosen as Outstanding Journeyman Mason was Earl Huggard of American Fork. Gunter Vieregge of Salt Lake City was honored as Outstanding Mason Tender.
A special Distinguished Service Award was given to architect Bruce J. McDermott of McDermott Associates, Inc., Salt Lake City, for the firm's many contributions to the masonry industry.
