Barton Myers Featured in IMI Lecture Series
Noted Toronto architect and urban designer Barton Myers recently delivered his fifth lecture in the continuing series of market development activities jointly sponsored by the International Masonry Institute and local/regional masonry institutes.
Myers' talks on the need for changes in our approach to urban design and development, and the codes and regulations that govern them have been delivered thus far in Los Angeles, Phoenix, St. Louis, Memphis and Rochester, N.Y.
Uniformly, the lectures have attracted high quality, enthusiastic audiences and have provided local/regional masonry promotion groups with an opportunity to build good will in the important market areas.
Masonry Groups Choose Executive Directors
The Masonry Institute of America, Los Angeles, Calif., has announced that Robert G. Thomas, a mason contractor for 23 years, has succeeded Leonard Thompson as executive director. Thompson retired after 13 years in that post.
In the Midwest, the Nebraska Masonry Institute has announced that Donald D. Littler, an architect, has replaced Bill Ross as executive director in Omaha.
IMI Honors Velardo for Meritorious Service
Charles F. Velardo (left), who served as chairman and trustee of the International Masonry Institute, was honored during IMI's recent annual marketing meeting in Reno, Nev., for his 10 years of service to that organization. Eugene George, IMI chairman and immediate past president of MCAA, is shown presenting Velardo a Certificate of Meritorious Service. Also honored at the meeting was former BAC president Thomas F. Murphy, who received a similar award recognizing his ten years of service to IMI as an advisor.
Kentuckiana Institute Sponsors Masonry Seminar
The Kentuckiana Masonry Institute, in cooperation with the Masonry Industry Council, held the first in a series of Masonry Update seminars in Lexington, Ky., July 24, at the Hilton Inn.
The principal topics presented were "Passive Solar: Nature's Energy Alternative" by Gordon E. Clark, architect and professor in the Purdue School of Engineering & Technology, and "Wall Costs and Characteristics," which featured a display of 4' 4' masonry wall panels.
The welcome was delivered by Paul A. Clements, chairman of the Kentuckiana Masonry Institute, and Bruce H. Crant of the Masonry Industry Council, who acted as moderator of the program.
Ontario Council Changes Awards Program Format
The Ontario Masons' Relations Council, Toronto, has announced a major change in its usual format for the 16th annual Unit Masonry Architectural Design Awards Program.
The 1980 awards will be presented at a joint luncheon with the Ontario Association of Architects at the Hotel Toronto on February 20, 1981. The ceremony will be in conjunction with the 1981 convention of the OAA, February 18-20.
Announcement of the restructured program and a conditions brochure will be mailed to all registered architects in Ontario on August 18, 1980. September 5 has been set as the deadline for registration. The preliminary judging of the submissions will take place on October 1, followed by the final judging on October 29-30.
Dahin Retires to Florida
John B. "Scotty" Dahin, former executive director of the Mason Contractors Association of Atlanta, has retired to Florida and accepted a part-time assignment with Ruck Brothers, Brick, Inc. in Fort Meyers. Dahin's home address is 310-C, 3490 N. Key Drive, North Fort Meyers, FL 33903.
