A Story with an Unfunny Twist

A news item datelined Greenville, Pa., tells about a very lucky ready-mix driver who escaped serious injury in a freak accident aboard his rig. The 27-year-old man was cleaning the drum of his rig after dumping a load of concrete when it all began. "I crawled inside to wash out some cement that was sticking to the inside, and the hose caught on the clutch lever that starts and stops the mixing," he said afterward. "It threw it into gear."
When the drum began spinning, all he could do was wrap his arms through a mixing paddle on the inside and hang there for the next two hours-while the mixer made about 30 revolutions per minute. A foundry worker noticed the machine was running for an unusually long time unattended and called other workers. They stoped the mixer, then heard the driver's cries for help. His ordeal over, the driver was hospitalized, nursing two stiff arms and suffering occasional dizziness.

Future Architects Learn about Block

Graduate students in the Yale School of Architecture recently learned about the structural properties of concrete masonry at Plasticrete Block & Supply Corp., North Haven, Conn. Here company vice president Joseph M. Rescigno uses a hand-operated machine to demonstrate how molded block are split to make the popular split ribbed units shown in the foreground. In production, the splitting is done automatically.

Playing with Paper Money
When a government any government starts trying to eliminate inflation by controlling wages and prices, what it is really doing is asking all of us to suppress the bad news that it has printed too much money.
The reason we have inflation in this country is that since 1967 the government has caused the money supply to grow nearly three times as fast as the goods and services that can be bought with it.
But the bad news will not go away. And no amount or kind of wage and price controls can make the government's paper money worth more of the world's goods than the world is prepared to give for it.
Government's ability to devastate an economy and blame it on someone else can never be overestimated...... Whatever the government any government decides to call its price control methods doesn't really matter.... All it means is that the government threatens to hit you harder later on if you don't behave after it hits you the first time. Charles F. Luce, Chairman, Con solidated Edison Co. of New York, Inc.
