Metropolitan Ceramics, Inc., Canton, Ohio, has appointed two new district sales managers: Toby J. Drake, with responsibility for the northeastern U.S. and Canada, and Richard M. Gierth, who will direct sales efforts on the West Coast. The national construction management/consulting firm of Morse/Diesel, Inc., has named Hank Govoni as executive project manager and Louise Kwan as project accounting/cost manager. Morse/Diesel currently represents its clients with total annual construction expenditures of approximately $1 billion. Former Texas Governor Dolph Briscoe has been nominated to the board of directors of General Portland, Inc., Dallas.

Schifko sales manager and Miles DiGiovanni sales representative. Arthur D. Stauber has been appointed vice president of manufacturing of Flintkote Cement Co., San Francisco, Calif., and John R. Gardner has been promoted to manager of manufacturing of the company's Calaveras Division.

The American Concrete Institute recently honored two executives in the construction field by presenting the Arthur R. Anderson Award to Paul Klieger, director of the Concrete Materials Research Department of the Portland Cement Association, Skokie, III. The Institute's Henry C. Turner Medal went to William M. Avery, founder and publisher of Concrete Construction magazine, Glen Ellyn. 111.. Charles A. Alden. ASLA. has joined Ferendino/Grafton/Spillis/Candela, architects, engineers and planners, Miami, Fla., as a landscape architect.
St. Louis MI Offers New Masonry Cost Guide
Valuable up-to-date information on all types of masonry walls-brick, brick and block, glazed tile, clay and gypsum tile, glazed lightweight block and decorative block and stone-is available in the new Masonry Cost Guide released by the Masonry Institute of St. Louis.

Historic Cotton Mill To House Elderly
The historic 135-year-old Hallowell Cotton Mill, Hallowell, Me., will be converted into 57 units of housing for the elderly. The five-level, red brick, 55,000 sq. ft. building will have 48 one-bedroom and nine two-bedroom apartments, including units for the handicapped.
The historic preservation officer for the State of Maine, Earle Shettleworth. Jr., researched the early history of the building to aid in the development of an historically sympathetic design.
Architects for the project are the Boston firm of CBT Childs Bertman Tseckares & Casendino, Inc. CBT has completed a number of major rehabilitation and restoration projects in New England and has won regional and national design awards.
New Engineer Joins NCMA Technical Staff
Robert VanLaningham, an engineer with special expertise in cements and aggregates, has joined the National Concrete Masonry Association as technical services engineer. He will handle member inquiries regarding both structural and non-structural properties of concrete masonry with emphasis on production problems.
Van Laningham, who holds a B.S. degree from McCoy College of Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, and an M.S. degree from Frostburg (Md.) State College, previously held engineering positions with Martin Marietta Cement Co., American Oil Co., and the Maryland State Roads Commission.
