IMAT Audit Indicates Progressive Growth
The trustees of the International Masonry Apprenticeship Trust (IMAT), Washington, D.C., have made public the audit of the trust for calendar year 1979 to provide an accounting to contributors.

The audit, shown in the accompanying box, represents the best efforts of the trustees to ensure further growth, innovative development and a higher degree of excellence of service to Joint Apprenticeship Committees and local unions throughout the U.S. and Canada, IMAT said.

IMAT trains new masonry craftsmen in a program run jointly by the International Union of Bricklayers & Allied Craftsmen, the Mason Contractors Association of America and the Tile Contractors Association of America.

IMAT listed net increases to its funds of $181,437 in the annual financial statement. Contributions and sales of textbooks and audio-visual aids helped produce a gross income of $386,047, while expenses totaled $204,609.

The trust listed assets of $388,021, including textbooks and audio-visual aids worth $166,903. IMAT's auditor checked the records and made the following statement:

Energy Conservation Featured in Design of Architect's Headquarters
Energy conservation was a prime consideration in the design of the new office building of Dean L. Glasco AIA Architects under construction at 4260 N. 19th Ave., immediately south of the Grand Canal in Phoenix, Ariz. The building will be partially sunken into the ground, with additional earth berms on the exterior restrained by planter walls.

The structure is heavily insulated, using expanded polystyrene on exterior masonry walls, conventional fiberglass insulation at stud walls, and urethane foam insulation on the roof. All windows are glazed with insulated glass and oriented in such a way that they receive direct sunlight only in winter months. The concrete floor slab acts as the building foundation because of its relationship to the grade elevation. Exterior walls are plain concrete masonry units topped with fluted concrete masonry units. A band of blue ceramic tile separates the unitized sections.

U.S. Gypsum Expands Texas Lime Plant
United States Gypsum Co. has announced plans for a major expansion of its New Braunfels, Texas, lime plant which will make it the largest lime producer in Texas. The planned expansion will nearly double the facility's quicklime and hydrate production capacity.

Lime, a critically important chemical for which there is little economical substitution, has a variety of commercial uses. One of its oldest but still current applications is in building construction for making mortar, stucco and plaster. When the New Braunfels expansion is complete, quicklime production capacity will increase by 88 percent. Construction is expected to begin the first quarter of 1981, with a targeted completion date in mid-1982.
