About Our Cover
One of the most impressive religious edifices in the Greater Milwaukee area is that of the new St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Brookfield, Wis. The building design executed by Rugg and Knopp, Inc. Architects/Engineers, New Berlin, Wis., recently merited an excellence award for masonry design from the Masonry Institute of Wisconsin in its annual recognition program.
"We are fortunate to have in this area fine craftsmen that were able to assemble the masonry elements to carry out the feeling of our design," commented Albert P. Rugg, a principal in the architectural firm. "This contributed to the success of the project."
Rugg stated that his firm utilized masonry because of its structural stability, feeling of permanence, and low maintenance. "Brick masonry was used in warm tones with a tower of contrasting white stone as a monumental accent," he explained. "The interior of the church was constructed of the same brick as was used on the exterior to give the structure consistency, tying the exterior to the interior."
The tower, which forms the chapel of the church, has an interior of native lannon stone, diamond sawed and honed. The towering chapel-26 ft. in diameter and 50 ft. high-has stone-framed art glass reaching to the chapel's full height, giving it a monumental and uplifting feeling.
"This firm," said Rugg, "has always used masonry. It competes in cost with any other building material, yet has a very low maintenance factor and the longest life of any of the building materials." The mason contractor on the St. John Vianney Church project was Whitney-Gohr Construction Ltd. of Milwaukee. Cover photo by Harry Seaman, Photo Comm, Milwaukee.
