ASC Opposes Change in Tax Accounting Method
The Associated Specialty Contractors has told the Senate Finance and House Ways & Means Committees that 165,000 contracting firms "vigorously oppose" the elimination or significant modification of the completed contract method of tax accounting.
Treasury Department proposals would have a devastating effect on the entire industry, which has been using the method for 64 years, ASC president Robert L. Wilkinson said in statements submitted to both committees. They would increase cash flow problems, decrease profit margins and expand risks in an industry that is already experiencing a severe economic recession, he said.
Construction contractors never know until all work is completed, claims settled and final payments made whether they have made a profit, Wilkinson said.
Benner-Nawman Relocates
Benner-Nawman, Inc., manufacturer of electrically operated diamond rebar cutters, has moved to new corporate headquarters at 3070 Bay Vista Court (Al), Benicia, Calif. 94510. The new phone number is (707) 746-0500.
Credit Card Ripoff
Mason contractors are warned to be on the lookout for a new scam involving their credit card numbers.
Here's how it works: the con artist calls asking your number on the pretense that you have won a prize. He then uses the number to charge a variety of items-and he's gone before you begin challenging.
What to do when the credit card company improperly bills you? First, go the police station, get a fraud affidavit, and send it to the credit card firm. Check once a month to make certain your account has been straightened out. If the company issues a bad credit rating to you because of the matter, you have good grounds for a lawsuit.
Better still, don't divulge your credit card number to telephone callers in the first place.
New Film Helps Cut Equipment Theft
Tougher But Worth It is the title of a new film produced by Associated Equipment Distributors to aid police and private investigators in identifying and recovering stolen construction equipment.
The 22-minute motion picture shows how easy it is for thieves to steal machinery from generally unguarded construction sites, and provides some common-sense approaches to help law enforcement officials and the private sector to cut back on these losses, which are running an estimated $1 billion annually.
The film can be purchased for $189 from Associated Equipment Distributors, 615 W. 22nd St., Oak Brook, IL 60521. The purchase price includes a copy of AED's 3rd edition Serial Number Location & Identification Guide.
