Child Construction Co. Salt Lake City, Utah, recently completed the masonry work on Wilde Wood Tower, which features state-of-the-art technology in all systems and is said to be the "ultimate" of any office building constructed on a speculative basis in Salt Lake City.

The 14-story office complex cost about $12 million and stands on the northeast corner of First South and Fifth East Sts. It is built of steel-reinforced concrete with a unique brick veneer. The brick is unique in that it is a special "Wilde Wood" brown, produced for the first-time and protected by a three-year copyright. Approximately 800,000 brick went into the project. Interstate Brick Co. manufactured the units. Scott, Louie and Browning was the architect.

"The special design and use of brick on this project have encouraged other architects to design brick on high-rise buildings," said Boyd R. Child, president of Child Construction Co. "Our costs were far less than window wall construction. The brickwork on the tower was finished one week after the concrete was topped out, showing the speed and versatility of our product."

The masonry was begun when concrete was to the sixth floor. Patent Scaffolding was used as well as the Getman-Jumbo Hoist, which Patent distributes. Finn B. Paulsen, Inc. was the general contractor.

Wilde Wood Tower provides features not usually found in most office buildings. Some of these include conference rooms, a mail room, a well appointed lunchroom and kitchen, covered parking, and walk-outs on every floor.

Substantial savings also were realized by establishing a building team at the project's inception and utilizing a fast-track development process.

The building was totally designed for the computer age. It has the capacity to accommodate dramatic computer and electronic technologies sure to develop in the future, without being retrofitted. The system presently has the capacity and memory to handle several other buildings, so future expansion should not present a problem.
